Inmarsat has made what may be the biggest technological revolution in its 30 year history after agreeing a landmark $1 billion order for three VSAT satellites, to be constructed by the Boeing Group.
Inmarsat and Boeing have confirmed the deal for the three Ka-band spacecraft, which will be added to Inmarsat's current L-band mobile satellite services fleet. Financial details were not disclosed.

Posidonia heart attack death points to the need for onboard defibrillators
The call for all ships to be fitted with defibrillators to protect seafarers against the threat of heart attack was brought home to the international shipping community with sad consequences at the Posidonia shipping exhibition in Greece when a 72 year old visitor to the show collapsed and died from a heart attack.

Hamworthy Water Systems has delivered its largest ever Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment plant for installation on board a cruise ship.
The twin process tank system, delivered to Meyer Werft’s Papenburg yard, Germany, is being installed on board a 5,600 passenger capacity cruise ship due delivery to an unspecified ship owner later in 2010.

The K-Chief marine automation system is a distributed monitoring and control system that provides high-end functionality for power management, auxiliary machinery control, ballast/bunker monitoring and control, and cargo monitoring and control.

The Norwegian satellite, AISSat-1 will be launched from India on 9 May. The satellite will be used by maritime authorities as an additional means of ensuring safety at sea in the High North. The satellite is equipped with technology developed in a joint effort by the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), Kongsberg Seatex AS, the Norwegian Coastal Administration and the Norwegian Space Centre. The project is funded by the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

STADT AS has a gained a foothold in both the offshore and fishing fleet with a new diesel electric propulsion system. The company is located in Gjerdsvika at the Northwest coast of Norway, and has patented a new solution based on Sinus-technology. “This is sustainable technology, and we are definitely on track,” says Hallvard Slettevoll, president of STADT AS.

A solar-powered airplane designed to fly day and night without fuel or emissions successfully made its first test flight above the Swiss countryside on Wednesday.
The Solar Impulse, which has 12,000 solar cells built into its wings, is a prototype for an aircraft intended to fly around the world without fuel in 2012.
It glided for 87 minutes above western Switzerland at an altitude of 1,200 meters (3,937 feet) with German test pilot Markus Scherdel at the controls.

An exhaust gas treatment system that uses water with increased alkalinity is showing impressive results. Singapore-based Ecospec Global Technology Pte Ltd. reports that ABS issued a statement on February 8, 2010 verifying the results of sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) removal from the emissions of a trading 100,000 dwt Aframax tanker installed with the Ecospec CSNOx gas abatement system.

NYK and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. are to begin experiments on an air-lubrication system to reduce CO2 emissions during marine transport. Jointly developed by the two companies, the system effectively reduces the frictional resistance between a vessel's bottom and the seawater by means of bubbles generated by supplying air to the vessel's bottom.
